Message from the Chair, January 11, 2021

In the wake of the January 6 insurrection on our Capitol, we have singly and jointly reacted deeply.  The one goal of the insurrection that we can be certain of, is its intention to overturn a secure and fair election.

As part of the Seventh Congressional District, Vilas County Democrats and our allies have borne the brunt of gerrymandered electoral maps for far too long and now feel the harms of this like never before.  We are once again not represented by our current member of Congress.  But in the person of Tom Tiffany, we currently find ourselves associated with the “fraudulent election” propaganda campaign and in particular the plan to overturn swing states’ electoral slates.

Mr. Tiffany supported all of this and his voice was broadcast through his Congressional “bullhorn” and his letter to constituents, the Tiffany Telegram.  Despite his condemnation of the violence several days after the insurrection, in the early hours of January 7, Tiffany followed through with his objection to the electoral slate of Arizona, ignoring the violence and seeking to disenfranchise voters of another State.

Having voted in November, we now need to respond to our elected member’s statements and his voting record thus far.  He is deeply committed to Trump and unrelentingly loyal to his few major donors.  Here are links to contact his office as well as links to related matters.  We encourage our members and communities to respond as they wish:

MESSAGE FROM THE COUNTY PARTY CHAIR, 11/10/20

Vilas Dems Community, we worked together with what I believe we can claim is our traditional resolve and initiative.  This election cycle has been momentous for the collective well-being across the county, the state and the country.  We turned out in Vilas County with a shift from red -4 to -2 change in % margin (Charles Franklin, @PollsAndVotes).  Not much, but we know well what a struggle it is to achieve any shift in our County results.  We threw ourselves into the effort to return Wisconsin to blue in the presidential election, but remain mired in our gerrymandered district maps which determined the outcomes for our Congressional and State races.  We will be going all out to work on fair maps so that we will not have to sacrifice candidates like Tricia, Ed, and Kirk whose platforms actually represent us.

The blatant harmfulness of actions taken by the sitting majorities of “representatives” in our State and across the U.S. is wide in scope; we will soon learn how deep the damages of the autocratic strain runs.  The national scene is likely to see further corrupt and intransigent acts from political players, while we urgently press on to restructure our society and the distribution of resources. We are asking our community members to continue to work on the national level.  We have watched the US Senate block bills passed in the House; that body will weaponize itself in opposition to President Biden, as our State Senate (and Assembly) have done to block a duly-elected executive leader. Please help out in Georgia if you are able; let’s listen to what they would like from us.

Our local concerns must be addressed energetically.  Identifying progressive candidates for local offices is a priority; and the fight for fair maps could not be more essential to us. Please join us for the annual meeting where we launch a discussion on the way forward with new efforts.  Join us in the Zoom Room on Monday, December 14, at 6PM.
Congratulations again to an energetic and growing volunteer base here In the Vilas Dems community.

In solidarity, Jane

Greetings from the Chair:
Women's March in D.C.

January 29, 2019

The Women's March in D.C. was a great success, although we were blocked from marching to our destination of the U.S, Capitol building.
It was very cold for D.C. but the turnout was energetic and the program was well organized.

My iPhone failed and I don't have pictures, but I wanted to share this memento from having met the resistance sister who created the pussy hat; she brought us this page from our history.

On to our next victory in April's State Supreme Court election.

Chair's Message - A week out:

November 12, 2018
It has been a week of reflection on wins and losses and a week of gratitude for comrades—each and every voter; every volunteer from the HQ’s to doorsteps to phones and postcard writing; and for those who worked each and every day recruiting, messaging, and collaborating.

We acknowledge what looked like and continues to look like an exceptional slate of candidates.  It is easy to support such worthy, prepared, and exemplary candidates from the Statehouse, the top State posts, our Senator, our House candidate, and our State Assembly candidate.  The obvious wisdom in supporting each and every one of you energized each and every effort we made.

Our County Party community can gather itself to relax a bit and respect one another in this election cycle effort.  I experienced the election through the Eagle River Headquarters; the GOTV effort was nothing short of stellar.  We welcomed volunteers during those last four days from around the eastern part of our county, some on Tuesday for the first time, and others for the fourth week-end in a row.  We were unified in principles and action, and constantly encouraged one another!  Despite sometimes working without cut turfs, we persevered to contact hundreds of voters to let them know they count and that we all depend on one another.

Once we’re a bit relaxed, it will be time to turn to the off-year (is there such a thing anymore?) efforts of fund-raising and member recruitment.  But there are other things to reflect on beyond the usual ones:  we must be vigilant in following the court cases surrounding redistricting; it would be a shame to send more candidates like Margaret and Chris out into that morass of prejudicial mapping.  It will also never be too soon to take what we learned this cycle and think about how we should unite as a county Democratic and Progressive community to organize for 2020!!  And we will not forget to participate in the effort to bring the Democratic National Convention to Milwaukee.  We have a superb chance to land the Convention and this will add greatly to turning our State blue again.

In solidarity, Jane Nicholson, Acting Chair, VCDP
