Message from the Chair, March 4, 2024
Greetings to all Vilas County Democrats and friends:
Thank you for being part of the Vilas County Democrats. We’re getting an enthusiastic response from so many of you!
With the latest decision of the Supreme Court to sit and delay the trials by dithering about immunity and if Trump can legally break the law, we know that the court will not save us. That means our only salvation against Trump is the voters. We’ll have to strive to get all the voters with a positive view of the Democratic Party to the polls.
This month we started a working goals group. How can you get anywhere if you don’t know where you are going? Some of the actions we are working on and looking to get volunteers for include Meet and Greet/Voter Registration at Rotary Square in Eagle River, flea markets in St. Germain and the Eagle River Farmers Market. Fun volunteer events that I am looking forward to are the Independence Day Parades. Our theme will be “Ride the Blue Wave”, complete with beach music, hot cars, and a swimsuit option. Whatever fun attention getting action we can think of!
We are ramping up our social media and will be asking you to write more Letters to the Editor. The Vilas County News Review is now pay to play, and will be charging to print letters that are political in nature. It could cost as much as $90 to publish a letter. The Star Journal is also charging for letters that their corporate office view as political in nature. So far the other papers in the area are still free.
Other ideas include postcard mailings to new residents of Vilas County, more speakers and events for both our membership and the public including candidate meet and greets and speakers on topics of interest. We plan to coordinate with 7th CD candidate Kyle Kilbourn so we can replace Tom Tiffany, who voted against creating an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack.
One last thing I am reminding everyone of. We are still looking for donations for our fundraising basket for the 7th CD Convention in Rhinelander. It’s our first fundraiser and the theme is “bring some talent you have.” I am bringing a semi-precious stone hand beaded necklace on silk, but it doesn’t have to be that elaborate. Handmade potholders or a few cards of recipes would be nice, for example. We want to fill the basket with items that show your talents.
We have so much to get done before the election, but as a team we can eat an elephant as long as we all keep eating, just one bite at a time.
